Just like quite a few people, I could not resist getting a Seagate Dockstar network device which allows me to share USB drives over my local network and also access these drives from the Internet. It was only $20 at Woot, so I'm not out a lot of money.
I plugged it in and it does work. I have a GB switch which connects to my computers, Dockstar and router. When an older notebook USB drive is connected to my computer, I get around 30 MB/s transfer rate, which is OK for USB. When I connect the drive to the Dockstar, the drive transfer speed tops out at around 8 MB/s, or about one quarter the speed. So my hopes of using this as a relatively high speed network storage device are not good. It is too slow. I even created a .ceid file so it supposedly doesn't need the Pogo service to work on my network, and the speed is still slow.
So my question is, what can I use this dog for? It must have some usefulness.
