Hi guys

i recently got the Seagate Barracuda ATA IV 80 GB 7200 RPM (thanks hot deals) and have a maxtor 40 gig 5400 rpm hard drive already
now i am trying to get the seagate to be a master hard drive and the maxtor as the slave

the IDE detector thingy correctly identifies them both but the seagate will say
ST3810024! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! (instead of ST38100A)
but hte maxtor will come out ok
then when it gets to loading the OS it will say DISK DRIVE FAILURE enter disk and press ENTER (I was scared for a sec that all my data was gone!)

i tried the 2 jumper settings for the seagate hd (one is a master and the other one is a non ATA compatabile slave)
neither works

the strange thing is that sometimes (if i reset enough :) ) it will boot correctly with both hds
i dont understand!

WTF!

any ideas, help!

i think its something to do with the fact that I think the Maxtor is only a IDE/AT device

but the jumper setting with non ATA comptabile hd didnt work so I dont understand

i found on the seagate website a utility that slows down the ATA transfer speeds so its more comptabile with the BIOS of the mobo

im not sure if thats what im lookin for though
any ideas would be appreciated!!
thanks!

Probably because your Maxtor is the bootup drive (i.e. it has your OS) and you have it set as the slave. Set the Maxtor as the master, the Seagate as the slave and see what happens. If you want the Seagate to be the bootup drive, you'll have to reinstall your OS from scratch.
