Seagate Barracuda IV - can't hear it!

Just installed a Seagate Barracuda IV 40G drive in my aging BH6 system. Replaced an IBM 75GXP 30G that was running fine. Short explanation to a long story is I was partially rebuilding an equally aging Shuttle HOT-661 system for a friend, and the BIOS limitation on the board wouldn't allow the B4 to be seen. So, my friend said "just drop your drive in my machine and take the B4 and put it in yours." I didn't need the extra storage space, but agreed to do it to get him back up and running. I literally cannot hear the drive over the drive cooler and other fans. And no, I don't have any screaming Delta's in my machine. Just a Gorb and an 80mm front case fan, along w/ the two fans in my Enermax 300w p.s.

I know. That is one of the best features of the drive. It has liquid ball bearings that you can't even hear.

It's really one of those things you have to hear (or not hear :p ) to believe.

ElFenix. I had the drive cooler in there for an IBM 75GXP. If you follow the logic in a web article I read the other day (and was referenced by HardOCP) the difference between a working and failing 75GXP might just be the cooler. When I Ghosted the 75GXP over to the BIV I touched the BIV to see if it was heating up. Warm to the touch, but no where near approaching hot. I figured it would do no harm to use the drive cooler, plus it adds additional airflow.

Here's a question re the BIV I can't find an answer to: does anyone have a copy of the Automatic Acoustic Management software that let's you switch the drive back and forth from quiet to performance? And, are the Barracuda IV's shipped in quiet or performance mode from the factory?
