The Samsung uses uses 3 higher density PMR platters while the 7200.9 uses 4 regular platters. The T166 Samsung is also reported to be very quiet by just about every review on Newegg. On SPCR a few users have confirmed it to be very quiet, some said even quieter than the P120 Samsung. A few HDTach screen shots showed that performance has not been compromised, in fact it's higher than average.

At $150 a 500gig comes out to 30 cents a gig. The best regular priced drive is the Seagate $90 320gig at 28 cents/gb. The Samsung 500gig is a very new drive too so we can expect the price drop steadily. It looks like after the 320 replaced 250 as the most economical capacity we'll be skipping 400 and go straight to 500.

TorqueU, can you elaborate?

I read the RMA terms and did not find anything there that I have to worry about.
All the drives that have died on me were completely dead. There was never a way that I could run and diagnostic tool, since it would fail to spin up (click of death).
Also, it's not that hard to find a static bag to ship the drive with.

Wasn't able to find anything on Newegg or Samsung's website about the actual warranty length, though a review on this mentioned a 3yr warranty.
I've never seen a Samsung retail kit at a B&M, so not sure if the Newegg has a shorter warranty length.

If you're after quiet vs. performance, this would be the one to grab (most HTPC users are like this).

Too bad I have to pay tax :(

exactly, if it were the 7200.10, it would have been hot.

Yeah- Samsung is usually 3yr and from date of purchase- not from manufacture date like most other manufacturers. And it doesn't require you to run their tests- they just "suggest" it as there is no fill in blank on the online RMA form requiring a diag code like maxtor support used to.
I really have no idea what TorqueU is getting at other that trying to cause unsubstantiated concern. I have RMA'd many Samsung drive's over the years and never had a reject. Not only that but unlike other manufacturers I have gotten NEW drives in replacement a few times instead of refurb/recerts.

I just bought the Samsung HD501LG myself...I've had a Samsung 250GB SP2504C for exactly 1 year and it's been fantastic, except I have only 3% free space
