Wow, Seagate 7200.8 400GB. Now...don't they think they should make some smaller (more affordable) 7200.8's too? That way, they could sell more disks :)

I only listed the highest capacities for each. Seagate actually announced 11 new lines of drives. The 7200.8 also has 250GB and 300GB capacities listed.

250GB is pretty huge! That'd be like $130 when there's a decent deal :Q

My guess would be that the 7200.8 line is based on the same 100GB platters that the current 7200.7 200GB drive uses. Might even be the exact same drives only with additional platters, like the Hitachi 7k400 is compared to the previously released 7k250. So Seagate is only announcing new capacities or old capacities with increased GB/platter.

Hmm, assuming that 7200.8 400GB model is comprised of 4 x 100GB platters, that should give Hitachi a run for their money. 4 platters instead of 5, should be theoretically faster, quieter, and more reliable overall. (Plus cheaper to build.) Go Seagate! I'm glad to see them out on the cutting-edge again.

It'll be nice to see how the new generation of 10K and 15K drives do.
The new 15K drives will be very interesting if not for the performance, but for the increased sizes, the 73GB max of current 15K drives is getting a little small.

And then of course, one can always hope for them to hurry up with the 22.5K drives ;)

Didn't Seagate recently get into a spot of bother regarding silent seek technology, which some company alleged that they stole from them?

I just got a 7200.7 160GB SATA and it's whisper quiet. The latest Anandtech review seems to confirm that they're still the quietest brand as well.
