I just got my first barraccudda and I absolutely love the lack of noise... apart from when it's seeking. it's definitely noticable then. sounds nothing like other hard drives do when they're seeking either; that sound I'm used to.

is this normal? is software needed to enable "quiet seek"?

(to test the seek sounds, I do something like search the entire drive for all files or something)

You mean AAM? It's usually enabled by default, but if it's tweakable there should be software from the manufacturer to do so.

Also, it's "Barracuda", not "barraccuda" or "barraccudda". :p

the spelling is a reference to a ytmnd site :)

so there's pretty much nothing I can do about the annoying seek noises? surprised they're so recommended for noise

I was more amused by the fact that you spelled it differently in the title and the body of the post. :p

Well, if AAM isn't enabled, but the drive supports it, you may be able to turn it on. That could dampen the seek noise a bit.

You can also investigate alternative mounting or enclosure options that might reduce the noise -- often much of the problem is resonance with the case/drive bay that amplifies vibration. Silent PC review has tons of information on this sort of thing: http://www.spcr.com

I thought AAM was on by default with PATA drives but with SATA, it's not always on.

I thought my 7200.9 in seek was amazingly loud. The 7200.10x2 320gb I have are all softer. Then again I run my fans at full blast now, so I can't really tell.
