Seagate 7200.10 or Samsung SpinPoint T?

I need a new SATA drive since mine failed after a year. I've read that the Samsung drives are fast, reliable, and quiet...but it failed.

So now I have it narrowed down to the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250620AS or the SAMSUNG SpinPoint T HD403LJ. So what do you think?

Thanks.

All OEM Seagate drives come with a 5-year warranty. AFAIK, all other OEM drives come with a 3-year or less warranty.

Does that mean that a Seagate will last longer? No, it doesn't. BUT, it DOES mean that if it does fail within 5 years from the purchase date that you get it replaced for free. I've bought only Seagate drives for the past two years and have had no problems at all.

I used to buy Western Digital drives and before them, Maxtors. Both companies have had a significant reduction in the quality of the hard drives AFAIAC in the past years.

I've not had a Seagate fail yet. I'm sure one will...but right now I've got three years of warranty left.

Your choice.

I've heard the Seagate can have a clicking noise? I haven't had a Seagate since it was around 2gb so I wouldn't know. I had good luck with WD drives but I can't afford a Raptor and the other ones don't seem to be great.

I'm a bit fearful to put my money into a Samsung again...

Some of the Seagate 7200.10 units have had the clicking noise problem. Some havent. Mine hasnt. I dont think there's a way to tell which ones will make noise and which ones wont. It seems to be random. The Samsung T166 units are getting high reviews from people. Not sure if they are more quiet than Seagate. My Seagate is pretty darn quiet. I cant hear it anyway so how can something be more quiet than that? I guess it comes down to personal preference. Let pricing be your guide I guess. Get the cheaper of the two.

I had to RMA a Seagate external drive once, 160GB. I found a bad sector during chkdsk. They sent me a brand new 160GB, but the box smelled bad, like if it was in a fire. So I called them again and asked for a solution.

They sent me 750GB top of the line external HD w/ USB and Firewire ports!

I guess they know how to please a customer...

The drive didn't even fail, just during the back-up Nero told me that it could not verify the copied files. The drive had 1 bad sector.

I am still using an old internal 120GB HD that came with my HP Pavillion over 3 years ago. Right now I am using 6 Seagate Hard Drives, internal have never failed, 5 year warranty just in case. I do not think I ever want to use any other brand.

i think you'd better get the samsung. the performance between the two is negligible if any. but the samsung runs noticeably cooler according to most benchmarks i'd guess an average of 3-5C cooler constant)

My T166s are more quiet than my 7200.7s.

seagate does offer the best warrenty out of all the HD manufacurers. does that mean that their drives will last longer? no. but if it does fail within 5 years, you can get an RMA.

OTOH, i've heard that Seagate drives are kind of loud. Samsung makes the quietest drives and their quality has improved drastically. I'd go with Samsung.

Even the best hd company will make a bad unit every once in a while. It happens. I shop by model though. Some models are alot better than other models. The Seagate 7200.10 models are very good IMO. But if you feel leary of the 7200.10 then go with the T-166. WD also has some very good models to choose from so dont neglect to look at them.

So throwing out any allegance, what is the fastest SATA drive for $60-$90 that has at least 200gb of storage?

If you search you can find some user benches on the storage review forums

That is interesting...is that a different drive than the one I have listed above? Newegg (and Seagate for that matter) list two (2) 250GB drives that carry the 7200.10 designation but they have different model numbers. The one you have a link to is "ST3250410AS" and is $69.99, and the one I mentioned above is "ST3250620AS" and is $67.99.

Any ideas?
