I have heard that the seagate drives are extremely quiet. At the moment, I have a 200GB Barracuda SATA and it is very loud. Like the sound of the drive clicking is the loud part. Previously I had a 80gb ATA IDE Barracude Seagate drive, and it was DEAD silent, I could not hear a thing from it, and this one seems remarkably loud. Also, im not too sure why it does this, but when I load windows XP with this harddrive, when it gets to the part where it goes from the black screen to the windows xp logo when it boots, the little blue bar that goes across doesnt appear for around 5 seconds, and when it appears you can hear the drive start to do its stuff. It is as if it temporarily freezes for a bit. This doesnt happen with any other drives. Can someone out their please tell me if this is normal for this drive or that maybe mine is a little dodgy?

Sorry about the big long paragraph

My board is an Asus A8V with 512 Kingston HyperX memory and athlon 64 3500+

Any help would be appreciated thanks

:frown: From Seagate's website: Every disc drive makes a certain amount of noise while running. Normally, the faster the drive motor spins, the higher pitched the resulting sound will be.
It is also normal for the drive to make sort of a "chattering" or "clicking" sound while it is reading and writing data.
However, if the sound coming from your drive has recently changed or is an excessive grinding or clanking noise, this may indicate a physical problem with the drive.
To isolate whether the noise is coming from the drive or the drive interface:
Shut down your system.
Make sure you have read the information above.
Disconnect the data cable.
Leave the power cable attached.
Apply power to the drive.
If the noise is still there, it may be coming from the drive.
--------------------

So I gather that if the noise is not new, then it is probably normal. The website also has some software tools that can help diagnose problems. You can even run some of them while online (guess it is interactive). The tools are at Sea Tools .

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for the reply. Noting has really changed since I bought it, the noise is pretty much the same when I received it, im just a bit uncertain whether the noise it makes is normal, like its a normal hard drive noise, but my last hdd was a seagate and it barely made a noise. I would never hear it make a clicking sound etc when looking for data, yet this one makes a really loud clicking noise, and judging by reviews and stuff off the net, it is the quietest on the market.

Once agian thanks for the reply. Just to see, I did a S.M.A.R.T using smart fan to see how it would pull up, and it showed the following results. You can see the results here
