seagate 18.2gb hdd

i just purchased a Seagate 18.2GB ST118202LC SCSI hard drive hard drive and i need to know what i need to install it

Formatted capacity: 18.2GB
Interface: 80-pin Ultra-SCSI Wide
Rotational speed: 10,000 RPM
Transfer rate: up to 80MBps
Average seek time: 5.7 ms

im new to scsi drives so assume that i know nothing about em =D

You do know you need a SCSI card to run a scsi hard drive dont you?

Unless your motherboard has an onboard scsi controller.
 
That drive is Ultra2 SCSI. So, you need an Ultra2 (or Ultra160/320) SCSI host adapter for starters. You will also need an LVD SCSI cable with terminator. You will also need an SCA converter since you purchased an SCA drive and those are for use in a hot-pluggable drive bay. (server or external array)

Hypermicro is a good vendor for all things SCSI.

Their SCA converters work well - many of them you find out in the market don't.

Their LSI SCSI card, LSIU160-WB, for $89 would be a good choice. Make sure you get the 'kit' as it comes with the cable you need. (Host Adapter section)

Their SCA converter, SCA68LVD, for $19 is the converter you need. (Terminators & Converters section)

do any of the new motherboards come with the scsi interface (LSI SCSI card or similar) so i could just get a new mobo instead of buying this? i need to upgrade anyway lol

im prolly screwed on the cables but they arent too expensive
 
I hope whoever you bought that drive off of, paid you to take it because it is basically worthless. The drive is 5 years old and very slow, with a top STR of under 20MB/s and a bottom below 15MB/s and an average access time around 10ms. Do not spend a dime on trying to get the drive running let alone the $90 or so it will take to actually do it. For $90 you can get a much faster IDE drive with 5 times the capacity.

not that im disagreeing with you about the drive being worthless but here are the specs.. can you be more specific as to the reason its garbage?

Without even looking at the specs, if you see 1998 and it is computer related, run away. The second part is the platter count. 12 platters is ridiculous by today's standard which is 4 tops. That many platters means lots of heat and lots of noise. The next part is the internal transfer rate, 152mb/s-231mb/s is equal to 19MB/s-28MB/s. In best case scenarios you cut off 25% to estimate STR which would give you about 14MB/s-21MB/s. By comparison, today's average 7200RPM ATA drive score about 30MB/s-55MB/s. The last highlighted is average seek time which is listed as 6ms average. Today's 10K drives are around 4.7ms spec'd (actual is slower). ATA drives today have a slower seek time but because the areal data density is so vastly superior, seeking through 18GB of data on a 120GB drive will definitely be faster on the ATA vs seeking the whole drive on the above SCSI. In short, that SCSI drive is ancient and I absolutely would spend $100 to get it running when that money would be much better spent on a new ATA drive. It should also be mentioned that that drive is likely either out of warranty or just about to be, when you can get a 3 year on a new ATA drive.

In all honesty, it would be a much better deal to buy the biggest 7200RPM 8MB cache ATA drive you can find for under $100 and create an 18GB partition on it, not even use the rest of the 60-100GB on the drive, and throw out the SCSI drive than it would be to spend $100 on a SCSI card, cables, terminator and pin adapter to get the SCSI drive working.
