Nice review. That old seagate 5400.2 looks to to a pretty decent job for an "old-tech" drive. It's more in my price range too.

The 5400.2 is a great drive also! Wait till next month and the 120GB 5400.3's should be out around the same price as the 5400.2!

fbrdphreak, can you tell me why in the previos laptop hardrive roundup the reviewer said the fujitsu MHV2100AH was slow, etc when it clearly beat the toshiba Toshiba MK1032GAX(which I believe got their recomendation) in almost all the bench scores ? Sorry to send this question to you through a forum post, but I would have emailed the article's author, but no link was provided with the article.

Thanks, Brian

Brian,
It wasn't ever said that the MHV2100AH was slow. I looked over the scores again and the two drives were pretty much neck & neck in the synthetic tests, with one pulling ahead of the other in about every other test. When it comes to real world tests though, the MK1032GAX pulled ahead in HL2 Level Load Time and the file copy times.
At the time that review posted, the drives were within $10 of eachother. For $10, it is really a choice between noise and a bit of extra performance. The 16MB cache helps out in a few different situations, while some people would prefer the whisper quietness of the Fujitsu drives. We recommended the Toshiba for the cache and acceptable noise levels, but it was also said that the MHV2100AH is a good choice as well:

We have not recommended a Fujitsu drive specifically yet, but that doesn't mean we don't like them. Both the 100GB 5400RPM and 120GB 4200RPM models performed competitively and were even quieter than Seagate's best. The 120GB 4200RPM MHV2120AT doesn't offer any performance advantages and is almost as expensive as the Seagate drive. Fujitsu's 100GB 5400RPM MHV2110AH however offers competitive performance and a super-quiet drive for less than the Toshiba MK1032GAX. If noise is a concern for you, this Fujitsu is a clear pick over any of the other 5400RPM drives (for the money). Those who want the absolutely most quiet drive available with respectable performance should look into the MHV2100AH (100GB 5400RPM) or the MHV2120AH (120GB 5400RPM) when it becomes available.

No reason not to get a Fujitsu, it just comes down to what your preferences are!

Also, to e-mail the author (me in this case ;)), just click on the name at the top of the article. I agree that is a little too subtle, I'll see if we can spice up those contact links ;)
