From what I've read there really isn't even a market in Japan for whale meat, it's just done to protect cultural identity. The scientific research excuse is absurd. A huge black eye for the country, I put this in the same category as shark fin soup and hunting elephants/rhinos for ivory.

The more things are restricted on anything endangered/illegal, the higher the resale value I suppose.

It works well for drug cartels.

Japan, as far as I know, has forced school kids to eat whale even though it tastes awful and — get this — is LOADED with mercury.

Yeah, giving kids heavy metal poisoning protects the national identity.
