SDSL modems that are "TUT" compatible?!

I've recently moved to the US and my ISP for my DSL service provides SDSL and says their modems cost $175.... obvioulsy this is outrageous. So they said if I want to buy my own, it must be:

-Synchronous DSL (SDSL)
-TUT compatible

What the heck is TUT compatible?? I'm lookign on ebay and there are a ton of SDSL modems for sale for CHEAP (eg. $10-$50). I've looked at the product specs on manufacturer websites, but none say anything about TUT compatability...can anyone enlighten me here?
