SD850 vs SD1100

I'm trying to decide between two cameras for my mom and am looking at the Canon SD850 and SD1100.

They both are 8MP and have IS, but the SD850 has 4x zoom whereas the SD1100 has 3x zoom. The SD1100 is a newer model and is a bit sleeker.

Up here in Canada, I can get the SD850 for $250 and the SD1100 is going for $230.

Any thoughts?

All else being equal, I'd say an added 1x zoom is worth $20.

Did you check the dpreviews or steve's digicams reviews for both?

Well, the 1100 saves you about .1 inches on every dimension, so yeah, it is a bit smaller. But as you mentioned, the 850 gives you more zoom, specifically a slightly wider and somewhat more tele lens (35-140 for the 850 vs. 38-114 for the 1100). You might also consider the 870 which gives you an even wider lens (28-112) which is usually better for a general purpose camera.

I have the SD850 and we also have the SD800(previous model to SD870 with wider zoom) and I have to say they both are excellent cameras but I have missed the wider angle more than the zoom.

I think for general photography in the family with a new user the more wide angle the better.
