SD card reader dead?

Hey guys, my wife has an HP notebook with an SD card reader on the side. Has been working fine for a couple of years. You put a card in, the little "what should I do with this?" dialog popped up, open a folder the files were there, and you can see the card in explorer. Within the last day or two it quit working. My daughter has an SD card with some pics and movies on it, and when my wife put it in the notebook nothing happened. She couldn't see it in explorer, no sign it was there at all. So she tried another card and it didn't work either. She gave the first card to me and I put it in my desktop and it popped right up.

So I took a look at the notebook. Control panel reports the SD Host device is in and functioning. So I uninstalled it and rebooted. Windows found the hardware on the reboot and reinstalled the host device driver. Card still did not work. So now I am wondering whether the interface between the reader and the PC is fine, but something has gone wrong with the interface to the card?

Any thoughts?
