SD card is stuck in my Canon SD 630

I can't get the SD card out of my Canon SD 630. When I push the card down to eject it, nothing happens. It goes down, but doesn't eject when it comes back up. I've tried to pull it out with my fingers, but it won't budge.

I haven't tried pliers yet because I'm afraid I'll break something.

Any idea on what I can do?

Instead of pushing down, have you tried a quick push IN ?

On my Canon S3, you don't push. The SD has a very thin groove on the top edge. I put my thumbnail in that groove and pull.

I've had this camera for over a year. I know you push it in. If I try to pull it out, it acts like its caught on something (as it should be until I push it down and eject it).

A quick push does nothing that a normal push doesn't.

OK - I guess part of the problem is visualizing what "down" means. If I were to push down, I would be attempting to break the card. Down normally means toward the bottom of the camera. Most SD cards I have seen fit into a slot on the side of the camera, and are pushed IN or to the camera's left.

What does your Canon manual say for removing the SD card? I don't know of a mechanical ctach - most are held in by friction against the edge contacts.

OK - I found the Quick Start guide for the 630SD Elph - the memory is in the bottom and is seated as follows:

630SD

Note! There is a button to the left of the SD card that you must push to release the cartd. Have you tried that?

There are words near a little plug that say that. I stuck something down there thinking maybe it was an emergency eject thing, but I just ended up tearing up a plug. I have no idea what the plug is for though.

It is not a plug - it is the pushrod to a release catch that lets the SD card eject.

If you have any doubt - take it to a dealer.

OK - just to let you know - the same type of media release exists on the Canon DSLRs. This clearly shows how the media is released from them. Same principle for your SD630.

Release

Release

It doesn't look anything like that. Its a small non-rectangular hole with 4 copper pins in it. Its clearly a plug. Not to mention, I already tried to push something into it. All it did was ruin the plug and destroy any chances of getting the camera fixed under warranty.

In the Canon illustration, the eject buttion is adjacent to the hole.

I strongly suggest you take the camera to your nearest dealer and have him/her show you how to eject the media.

I see the illustration, unfortunately my camera doesn't look like the illustration. I wish I had a second camera so I could take a picture. The instructions clearly state to push down on the SD card to pop it out.

OK - we're going in circles. Using the Canon SD630 illustration above, please state which way is "down."

Release

It looks like memory slot in Canon 630 works like Canon SD10 which I owned.
Leros is right when he says that he has to "push it down" in order to eject the card. That's how it worked on SD10 as well.
Corky, Leros said he owned the camera more than a year and the illustration you linked is about Canon dslr. How can you claim that it's "Same principle for your SD630"?

Anyway, isn't there a small hole near the memory card slot? If so, you can stick a wire into it to manually release the memory card.

Sadly no. The only thing near the SD card is some kind of plug, which I have managed to destroy when I thought it was the manual release slot.

If you refuse to drop in to a nearby dealer, there's nothing more to be said. Requiescat in pace! :(

And in terms of this illustration from the SD630 Quick Start Guide, which way is down? You have never answered that question.

Sorry! Am now chilled. It's been 4+ days. :)

The basic problem is - which way is down when the SD630 illustration shows the camera face down on a table with the media going in horizontally.

Cheers!

The 630 uses SD, not CF, as in the picture. I own a 600, cousins own a 630. It's just a simple push in, card ejects, there isn't an eject button. The metal portion of the SD card goes down, as in if the camera were translucent - when you're looking at the LCD at the back of the camera, you'd be looking at the metal portion/tips of the SD card. The label of the SD card (or top) would face the same side as the front of the camera.

Finally, a meaningful definition of what to do. "Push in and release." Not "down." That makes sense with the Canon drawing from the manual. Evidently it is a spring loaded catch and release that is activated by pushing the SD card IN.

BTW - that is exactly how it works in my Canon S3.
