Scythe S-Flex or Gentle Typhoon Fans

I'd like to order a new computer and replace the case fans with quiet ones. There are only a couple of serious comparison reviews on the net. They seem to point to Scythe S-Flex or Gentle Typhoon, yet newegg shows these fans as out of stock even though they have 5 star reviews. Even more ominously, scythe's website just says "discontinue." Will there be new models or am I screwed?

Can anyone recommend good, quiet 120mm case fans?

Will a 220mm case fan get quieter if it is slowed down or will it tick or make some other annoying noise?

Thanks

Scythe Gentle Typhoon is a very good fan and cost a lot as well. I want to get them as well but they seem to be out of stock here most probably because they are selling like hot cakes.

You can try Yate Loon or Artic Cooling F12 as an alternative to the Scythe GT. A 220mm fan will have a lower RPM than a 120mm fan because it doesn't need to spin as fast to have a higher CFM but most probably static pressure is reduced. Tick and any other annoying noise depends on the quality of the bearing and the fan itself.

if you're using intakes/exhausts, the slipstreams can be a better bet than the sflex or GT fans.

sflex being discontinued is disappointing. it's been my go-to fan line for 5 years now. i suppose the kama flow 2 is the replacement, though the RPM lineup seems funny.

Most of the reason they were out of stock was due to the earthquake in Japan. However, they can be found more easily now in shipments to different sites. The problem right now is finding a large stock of certain types of GT fans.

I would go with the GTs if you want to get great performance, but price is high compared to some brands. If you want something similar, I would go with true Yate Loons since you can buy a large quantity and still spend less than needed for a full case of GTs.

I have had horrible luck with 80mm S-flexes (terrible vibration; RMAs were no better). I am happy with their slipstreams.

I am extremely happy with both 80mm and 120mm Noctuas. They are a bit pricey, but at least you'll likely never have to fish in your case and replace them. Their performance is very even over time (been running for 8 months straight without issues). My other cheaper fans tend to slow down and/or get noisier after a few months.

I have 8 120mm scythe fans ..

Scythe S-Flex SFF21G 120mm

I have the entire line ... just throw the G's on my fna controller and they kick ass on my water cooling rad's.

I want to add that i have like 20 or so Noctuas, most of them over a few years old now.
Not a single issue with any of them. They are superb fans...

I have 2 Sflex 800 Rpm fans in my system. They are about 2 years old. They cool my system perfect and they are dead silent to boot. I have been very very happy with them..

I'd go with GT since they can be used for cpu hsf as well. but if money is a concern sflex is cheaper but it lacks the static pressure gt has.

I vote for the Sflex also

Using S-FLEX F 1600rpm x2 on my TRUE
and a S-FLEX F 1900rpm as my exhaust on my case

Excellent fans and super quiet on a fan controller :p

They are worth the money!
