Scythe Big Shuriken and Shuriken Rev. B

Hi All,
I'm currently planning my next HTPC and would like to install the most silent heatsink/cooler in it using the Silverstone Grandia GD05 case.
First, I would like to know what is the difference between Big Shuriken and Shuriken Rev. B?
Second, In case money is not an issue and I won't use a water-cooling, Is one of them is the best silent heatsink/cooler I can get for my HTPC?

I'm using it to cool a Q8200 in an Antec NSK1480. All I hear are the 80mm case fans (set to their lowest speed) and the PSU. Highly recommend if it's the only thing that fits. For LGA 775, the pegs are a bit of a pain to put in; you really need to have the motherboard out (I could install stock coolers with the mb already mounted in the case).

I've got the vertex 30GB for my OS and apps and its unbelievable. Reads are 230MB/sec and writes about 150MB/sec with no lag in latency. Best upgrade I've made in a long time.

Thx Kantastic, btw, I see you have the OCZ vertex 60GB, I ordered the 30GB for OS (win7) and apps, is it fast? reliable? do you notice a real change from normal HDD?

The Vertex is noticeably snappier when opening files and starting apps. I would say it's fast but I'm not sure whether or not it's reliable since I've only had it for a little under 2 months. I have 20GB left with W7 installed and a handful of apps so 30GB will be a tight fit. You'll like it though.

It's good to hear that, thank you for your reply.

I have that case for my HTPC. It's a great case but the top clearance is very low.
I bought an aftermarket cooler for my case but had to return it because it was too high. The Big Shuriken should work as it's listed at 64mm. The GD05 case has a clearance of 70mm (remove DVD/Bluray drive if you want install up to 120mm).

I was thinking about getting the Big Shuriken but I decided to try out the Intel stock cooler (i3 530). I was amazed at how very quiet it was. I can't hear the fan from 3 feet away from the case in a quiet room.

For the case fans I recommend using the LIAN LI PT-FN02 Fan Speed Controller:

The built-in fans were quiet but not enough to my liking. So, I installed this fan speed controller. Now they are barely audible from 3 feet away in a quiet room.

Well, first, it's good to hear the Intel fan is quiet, I might not buy the Big shuriken if I don't need it.
Regarding the fan controller, I'd like to ask if I can control the fans speed from the motherboard or not.
And If I have to buy a fans controller, where/how do I install it?

This is my (almost) final component list for my new HTPC -

CPU- Intel Core i3-530 Tray
CPU Cooler- SCYTHE SHURIKEN Rev.B
MOB- Asus P7H55D-M Evo
GPU- Sapphire Radeon HD5550 1GB GDDR2 Ultimate-Passive PCI-E
HDD- WD 2TB 7200RPM 64MB GREEN SATA2, WD20EARS
SSD- OCZ VERTEX 30GB
PSU- Enermax Modu87+ 500W
Case- Silverstone Grandia GD05 (3x120mm quiet fans)
Memory- G.Skill 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3-1600, 1.35v, 7-8-7-24-2, CL7
DVD- ?
Mouse/Keyboard- ?

The SSD already bought and I need your opinion about the rest, and if someone has a recommendation for the most quiet DVD-Drive (no BluRay) and keyboard with mouse, I'll be happy to hear ... 😀

The fan speed controller gets installed into one of the back plates where you would normally mount an addon card or graphics card. Unfortunately, this does not allow you to control it from the motherboard or in Windows. It has a physical switch that you can set at either low, medium or high. I've set mine to low and never needed it set any higher. My system is very cool and rarely goes above 35C.

If you want to control the fans from Windows then you'll need to get a motherboard that has at least 4 fan connectors (1 for the CPU and 3 for the case fans). I doubt you'll find one of the microATX boards that have that many but you may get lucky. The motherboard you selected only has 2 fan connectors.
