scsi woes

Hi, I've got a tekram u2w card and a fujitsu u160 drive connected to it, id0, and then I also have a plextor 40max and a zip100 drive (both internal) that I've been trying to get to work. I have odd, intermittent pauses in win2k and winxp, not as often (but still happen seldomly) when the fujitsu is alone, then slightly more with only the zip drive, and then the the point of unbearable with both the zip drive and the cd-rom connected. I have been trying every permutation of id# and termination, but I still can't get these pauses to go away.

The odd thing is that they happen during normal websurfing/wordprocessing/etc - I get constant transfers from the zipdrive or the cdrom easily, but every so often my mouse pointer goes to the "accessing CD" thingy, and I hear the cd-rom try to spin up as if there were a CD inserted, whether there is one or not. I am using the jumpers on the zipdrive and the cdrom to terminate the ultra scsi portion, and the tekram active terminator that came with the card to terminate the u2w section... I'm rather new at scsi so if there's anything I might be overlooking, or any comments whatsoever that might help me out, I would be really thankful.

just in case they'll help, my system specs follow:
windows xp pro, using the symbios drivers provided w/xp because no amount of cajoling gets the tekram drivers installed, it shows up as uncompatible at the "update driver" screen, and brute-forcing the driver in and trying to remove the lsi does not work...
...tyan tiger 100 (440bx) w/2x850mhz p3, 512mb ecc sdram, aforementioned scsi devices, controller in slot #5 w/reverse search order, 4 more pci devices (ethernet, ide-raid, sound, mpeg) in that order from #4-#1, asus gf2mx agp video.
thanks again for any help possible, I'd really love to be able to put my cd-rom and zip drive back in w/o pulling my hair out every five minutes or so,
kaytwo

have you terminated the devices properly, recheck!
is the hdd on a cable by itself? if so is there an active terminator at the end of the cable!
what IDs do do the cd & zip have.?
is the host card at ID 7? is it sharing its irq with anything?
finally, are the tekram drivers specifically for XP?

I hate forward-back buttons in IE, just erased my nice big pretty reply. anyhow.
termination seems okay - there is an active terminator on the hard drive and it is on the 2nd connector away from the card, the hdd being on the 1st away from the card. I have tried using both the zip and the cdrom to terminate the ultra segment using the jumpers on both drives, and most recently I used the zip to terminate, it being on the 3rd connector from the card, the cdrom being on the 1st (for length purposes). I have used several id combinations for the zip and cdrom drives, most recently 1 for the zip drive and 2 for the cdrom, and always use id 0 for the hdd. The host is ID 7, it is sharing irq 19 with the fasttrak tx2 ide-raid controller and (this seems a bit odd) the video card. the drivers are for win2k and the tekram site advises one to install them, using the "update driver" method, but it tells me that the drivers are "not a match" for the card, and insists on using the driver for "LSI Logic 8951U/8952U Adapter; 53C895". In various config screens it lists the correct LUN and ID# for whatever I have installed at the time
thanks again,
