Having some age-old SCSI problems with my Plextor 40x (not ultrawide)

A little different from before, but basically, it's hanging when trying to open or run something from a CD. When trying to copy soemthing I get an error "Cannont read from the device," after a minute or two of the computer thinking (timeout error?), yet I can see the files just fine. Changing directories works, but is about a minute or two before the directory actually shows up.

Its system properties are "Disconnect." Auto run and Sync data are disabled. I remembered back in the day trying sync, but had similar problems to what I'm having now, so its always been disabled (and is by default when installing windows for the first time).

I'm running a Symbios controller (Fireport 40 dual), with the Plextor and a Philips 2x CDRW, on the same cable. I've been burning CDs all day, so the Philips is fine.

In fact, I'm thinking that might be the problem. I filled up my Maxtor HD with approximately 10-15 gigs, bringing its free size down to below 100megs this weekend, and have been slowly burning images and removing them for the past couple days. Its now back up to 7gigs, but I'll go ahead and run scandisk and defrag and see if that helps.
