I'm looking for some benches or reviews between U160 10k scsi hdd's and 10k raptors or similar drives....... strengths, weakness's, etc. i'm not talking about $$$, just performance. I'm running a 10K U160 scsi now and am wondering if going to sata will hurt, help, or be comparable. I can't find any good comparisons online, if you know of any, lmk. :D

Thanks

This site has one :D but I think you should probably do a reality test before being drawn into conclusions from looking at graphs. I've used a SCSI drive similar to the Atlas 10k IV in overall performance, and I've used the WD JB-series drives. The graphs can say what they want, but in real life... yeah. SCSI rocks  If you're looking for more performance, then my advice is to go for the Fujitsu MAS-series 15000rpm drives.

Compare the sustained-transfer graphs for the Fujitsu MAS-series versus the WD360GB Raptor. The Fujitsu's range is from about 80MB/sec down to 64MB/sec, the Raptor's is from about 64 down to 43. Which one would you rather have? :)

And unlike most folks, you've already got the necessary card and cable

good answer, i'll check the link out........... but like you said "i allready have the scsi setup"......... i'm running a 10k 73gig on a 39160 controller, i think i'll just try to get a 36gig 15k for a boot drive and leave well enough alone;)

So any one of these hard disks would be a pretty good choice? So is it true the Fujitsu MAS line are the fastest hard drives available under $300? By the way, what's a GREAT Ultra320 card to go with this drive?

One of the customer reviews says "Windows loads in under 5 seconds"! Whoa. Could be an exaggeration, but since the hd is the slowest component in any system, I imagine a super fast hard disk could make a dramatic improvement, much more so than a faster processor.

If you run one drive then even a U160 card will give the drive breathing room, and I'm planning to get one of those $42 LSI Logic U160 cards if/when I get a Fujitsu MAS to go with my Cheetah X15-36LP. I would have a hard time believing Windows literally loads in five seconds  but yeah, it seems from StorageReview's benchmark results that the Fujitsu MAS-series are the fastest overall drives around.

I was doing some disk-intensive stuff at work last week, and I brought home a spare IDE drive to do some of the same stuff at home for a couple nights (making a little batchfile that takes "raw" Office2000 Professional CDs, makes an Administrative Installation Point out of them, then patches them to SP1A, then patches them to SP3, and finally tacks on the post-SP3 Outlook patch). Tell you what, that IDE drive just about made me lose my mind with frustration :p

You can't really take advantage of U-320 on 32-bit PCI - you really need 64-bit PCI like server mobos have.
That LSI-U160 mentioned above is neato and cheap - get it bare and buy your cable from centrix-intl - great cables and cheap but you have to buy at least 5 lbs. of stuff to get reasonable shipping.

Where's the :sun: ??
