SCSI Termination...

I have an ADAPTEC 2940u2w card. It is on SCSI ID 7. I have 3 devices on my regular SCSI 3 (20MB/sec) interface, and 2 SCSI HDs on my U2W (80MB/sec) interface. The HDs are on IDs 0 and 1 and the LVD cable has its own terminator. The 50 pin devices are on scsi ID 2,3,and 4. Do I have to set termination on any of my 50 pin devices?

Termination is a seperate thing from ID settings, but here goes anyway...

Basically for SCSI to work, you need to have both ends of the *physical* bus terminated.

Thus, in your situation, and I'm going out on a bit of a limb here, for I'm not too familiar with your card, you would probably setup the bus termination like so:
(U2W Bus Segment)             |                 (SCSI-3 bus segment)
|--------------------|--------|------------|------------|--------|-----------------|
(terminator) (hdd) (hdd) (adapter) (dev1) (dev2) (dev3, terminated)

I think that'll work, but you'd be best reading the card's manual (latest version should be downloadable off adaptec's site), and having a look at this site: http://www.scsifaq.org

Hope this helps.

Insufficient termination will cause devices to not work properly, but it won't affect a USB scanner :) It only affects SCSI devices.

Double check that you have termination enable on the last drive on the SE chain. If one device doesn't terminate properly, you can rearrange them on the on the cable so that you can use another device to terminate the chain or buy an external terminator.

Leftnut,

I believe the u2w (68 pin) and ultra (50 pin) segments are completely separate on the 2940u2w. Think of it as having two scsi cards in one - with each segment requiring its own termination. Well, at least that's how it is on my tekram dc-390u2w. :)

So yes, both sections of the bus have to be terminated. That includes the 50 pin ultra section.

Nope,

Scsi and USB are totally separate. The only way they might conflict with each other is with IRQ sharing. Though if improper termination caused windows to screw up data read and written from the drives, that might affect the operation of usb. However, you would notice this with all your data, not just usb drivers or something.

An analogy would be if your monitor was acting up, you would blame your floppy disk drive or something, it's just not plausible.
