SCSI tape drive versus IDE drive

Is a SCSI tape drive any better than an IDE tape drive? Some documentation from manufactures with both show the same transfer rates for similar products but one being SCSI and one being IDE.

Is there more reliability with SCSI?

Does it really matter?

I can't speak to reliability with SCSI tape drives vs. IDE tape drives, since I've only worked with a couple (OnStream SCSI) but my experience with hard drives tells me that SCSIs are more reliable than IDEs.

That being said, you have to remember that the advantage of SCSI vs IDE are the capabilities of the SCSI bus and devices attached (Bus Disconnect, Tag Command Queueing, etc), plus the number of devices that can be attached to the bus give SCSI a distinct advantage in most configurations.

As always, IMHO

I use an OnStream SCSI tape drive, too. I've had zero problems with it now for over 3 years. I unquestionably trust SCSI over IDE when it comes to my production servers, but IDE has always been good to me on my home machines.

I also have the Onstream echo tape drive SCSI and its failing somewhat and becoming unreliable.

Is there an advantage to having a scsi backup as opposed to an IDE backup drive?

Any good backup drives out there?

Is 3 MBps data transfer rate good?

Any good backup software for Win XP Pro, Retrospect Express Backup???

Used DLT 7000 (SCSI) gets 20 gig/hr. I got one for $350, and it's great. I will never go back even to DSS2 or 4.
