Does anyone know a company that makes affordable scsi raid controllers. Adaptec is too expensive.

I use SCSI raid drives that are last generation rather than bleeding edge technology and the prices are more than reasonable. For instance, the last machine I built I used an AMI Enterprise Ultra F/W controller with 128 megs of cache memory with battery memory backup that I got for $135 and four, 9 gig Seagate 10k RPM Cheetah drives for $68 each. The only caveat on buying older controllers is that there are a lot of them out there that don't have drivers for the newer operating systems. Look for the companies that sell surplus, used, refurb, and takeouts. There are thousands of drives and controllers on this market that have many good years of service left in them and the prices are more than reasonable.

The only "affordable " SCSI RAID CONTROLLER(an Oxymoron in itself) is the Adaptec 2100s..BUT IT IS COMPLETE JUNK,
ofen offering preformance below that of a single Hardrdrive.

MY advise. A cheaper solution would be to get just a Seagate 36LP 15k ultra160 drive......the FASTEST preformance overall, and you would save money and still get a constant ttranfer rate of 60MB/s and access times in the 3.xxs range before latency.

Anyways, the PCI bus on standard 32bit slots is too slow to accomodate a nice SCSI array and all the other devices that need access on the PCI Bus.

If RAID a requirement of somesort and/or you have a board with 64bit 66mhz slots, I recommend what others have Hinted at. Mylex is oustanding, and now owned by IBM.
LSI is great and so is tekram. ATTO is also a competitor.

I suggest you consult the people @ hypermicro.com. THey are VERY knowledgable(well Aat least the guy I spoke to was) and can tell you their best option that will fit your needs.

If you can elaborate on your situation., I'm sure others on the forums, including myself, could aid you in finding an acceptable solution

Go to Pricewatch.com and look under IO controllers for Mylex. You'll find a couple of pretty good choices for $150-200. Mylex has a web site with a lot of good info that will help you sort out the features and capabilities of the cards offered. Good Luck.

ATTO controllers are great, but unless you run a MAC it only offers RAID 0. If you really need data redundancy consider all aspects. Cheap is not necessarily good.
