SCSI Questions

Well some of you may remember that about a month ago I was contemplating selling my 2 30gig IBM 75GXP's for a 10k SCSI setup. Well one of my IBM drives just died yesterday, so I'm gonna do it now. My question is about what to get though, considering my no0b status in the SCSI area.

Here is what I will sell:
$120 - 1x 30gig IBM 75GXP
$100 - 1x 30gig IBM (75GXP?) - after being returned from refurb.
$75 - 72x Kenwood CD-ROM (TrueX - FAST!)

Here is what I want:

U160 10k SCSI HDD (> ~18GB)
SCSI U160 PCI Controller

I was looking at the Quantum Atlas 10k III (18.4 gig version), is this a good choice? How loud is it?
I have no clue about what controller to get though. The no0b in me says Adaptec, but that's really just name recongition. What do you guys reccomend? Speed comes a distant 2nd to reliability/compatibility in my book btw (if this makes a difference).

I figure about $150-200 for the Atlas 10k III drive, which leaves about $150-100 for the controller. Doubt I'll make it (controllers seem to be more in the $200 range), but an extra $50-75 would be no problem.

Also how feasible would it be to trade my 8x IDE Plextor drive for a 12(?)x SCSI Plextor? I know there will need to be some extra $$$ involved, but how much?

The 18 GB Atlas III is a great drive and reasonably quiet for a 10K drive
Tekram DC-390U3D or DC-390U3W are good quality cards as is the Adaptec 29160. Get whichever you can at a fair price. Adaptec is the defacto "leader", at least in name recognition.
Plextor drives will cost you more, but that is because they are worth it. You taking RW drive or straight CD ROM ?

Sounds like a great idea. The 10K III would be a good deal, the 18GB is going for $190. From what i've read, its one of the quietest 10K drives available. Seagates 36ES and 36XL may be a little quieter on seeks, but i doubt its a big difference. Stick with IBM, Seagate, or Quantum for the best reliability IMHO.

You could get a Tekram DC390U2B for $108 or a DC390U2W for $128. Both would serve you well, but you should get the DC390U2W if you want to hook up 50-pin optical drives since the U2B doesn't have a 50-pin connector. I use an Adpatec 19160 for my HD and Plextor 12/4/32 SCSI CD-RW. Its fairly cheap at $145. Both brands are very reliable. You can find cheap controller cards here, but i've never ordered from them. I like hypermicro for all my SCSI needs.

10K III is a fine choice. Seagate is better, but the 10K III is the speediest of the 10K variety.

You might be able to get your hands on an original X15 which would be better in the seek department, albeit not by much.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll still have to do some price shopping, but I at least know what to look for now.

BTW, I was talking about Plextor burners 😉

The Seagate X15-36LP is slightly faster, not noticeably faster. I have both, the 10K III is much quieter and has better bang for the $$ right now.

BTW, you should easily be able to get a 19160 controller for under $120.
