SCSI questions...

okay, i've decided that since i have the cash, i'm going to go with:

SCSI Card: Adaptec SCSI 29320-R Ultra320 SCSI
SCSI Drive: Maxtor Atlas 15K 36.7GB Ultra320 SCSI - 15000rpm

1. Has anyone used either of these pieces of hardware? comments on either?

2. At such a high speed, will excessive heat and/or noise be an issue?

3. Should i expect any problems setting up WinXP Pro on this drive? (will it be recognised if i boot from a WinXP CD)

Thanks for any input!

I have some machines at work with 10 and 15k SCSI drives and they DO get HOT. If you have a nice case that has a fan in the drive bays (like my Antec case) then you should be OK. Otherwise you might want to consder a hard drive cooler for one of your 5.25" bays and mount it there. Spending a few bucks to keep it cool is definitly a good way to protect your investment.

You might consider the Fujitsu MAS-series, which are competitive with the Atlas 15k in the benchmarks I've seen at StorageReview.com (FWTW), and feature fluid bearings. The MAU-series models have been announced recently, and it's reasonable to expect they'll be significantly faster yet, but I haven't seen them on the market yet.

edit: you'll probably need to have the 29320-R's driver on a floppy diskette for Windows installation. No biggie.
