I just got (free) a 4 gig and 3 cd drives. Is it worth setting up a second case for these? If so whats the best/cheapest pci scsi controller? I have plenty of hd drive space as it is but have always wondered about scsi, just could'nt afford it.

What CD drives? of course you need to have a cable to hook them up if you put them in another case.

I am considering getting a dual device external enclosure. Then just have my CDROM and CDRW on my desk. My DVD can stay in the case since its IDE.

All the cd drives are 8X. Cable came with them. The drives came out of an old server from work the were going to throw away.

Make sure you consider maximum cable lengths in your planning. The maximum length for a 50-pin FastSCSI2 (10MB/s) SCSI chain is 3 meters. The length of your internal cable plus the length of your external cable would have to be less than this. Ultra2 LVD SCSI (80MB/s) can have a cable length of somewhere around 12 meters. This is much nicer if you have both internal and external devices.

Although I've had problems with all 3 of my orders from them, Computer Geeks is selling a *really* cheap 50-pin external enclosure.

You can get more details about SCSI from the SCSI FAQ

I have an old mid tower i would use to mount he drives in. It would be put right beside my system. I would just feed the cable through to it. I have a cable with a total of 6 connectors and about 3 ft total length. The Tekram seems to be the one to get from a price/performance stand point. Any other suggestions/ideas?
