SCSI probs..please help

I have a VERY curious problem.

I have a SCSI card that I've tried on several IRQ's, always the same thing. If I have all my SCSI devices connected then for some reason my SCSI CDR gets "polled" every now and then.
The net result is a momentary 'lockup' of Windows and whatever I am doing regardless of work or game. My other SCSI devices seem to be working quite normally.
If I unplug the CDR the problem disappears and I can get on 'normally.....BUT.....I need the CDR.

Questions:
1-What could be causing this???

2-Is there a setting or command I can use so the CDR does not get polled?

Curious fact:
I had the SCSI device on IRQ9. Windows said it was working normally, no conflicts but it did share the IRQ with the "VIA PCI to USB controller". When I set my SCSI card to IRQ 4 in the motherboard's bios the USB controller moved with it too....DOH!
Why, anyone?

I used all the default bundled Win_ME drivers with the exception of those listed below.
Could the latest Via 4-in one drivers solve this?
I have read that the Microsoft DMA controller is faster so I stuck with the default drivers..and my HD is VERY quick according to Si-Soft Sandra.

I have:
Windows_ME / clean install /
ASUS 3PV4X, 1005 BIOS
128MB PC133 / Hyundai
PIII700 @933 / 1.65v (my problem is there even if I don't overclock)
Maxtor 7200rpm 30gig / 1st IDE channel / DMA enabled.
AOpen 32x CDROM / 2nd IDE channel / DMA enabled.
Diamond TNT2 /latest Nvidia Detonator drivers
Diamond MX300 vortex2 sound card / latest ref. drivers.
3Com EtherLink XL PCI Combo 10bT network card / Win_ME drivers.

ASUS SC200 SCSI PCI controler / Win_ME drivers (Symbios 53C810 device)
SCSI devices:
Matshita SCSI CDR (CW-7502)
SyQuest EZ230 external drive.
UMAX 600S scanner.😕

The slot you have selected shares with USB.. you will have to move it to another slot if you dont want that..must be a bus mastering slot. Make sure all devices are not terminated but the last drive on the cable. If the card has a boot bios and you are using a SCSI Hdd check the setting for all the drives. Try to deselect auto insert notification if the problem persists..and check back here if you continue having problems.
