SCSI Opticals

After doing some rearranging in my case last night to try to improve airflow, I decided that cable monster would be easier to handle if my five IDE drives didn't have to share four channels. I've been looking into replacing my current DVD-ROM drive with a SCSI model from Pioneer, which I could add to my existing Adaptec 29160.

Anyone have any opinions or words of wisdom on this plan?

I am wondering if there any particular advantages or disadvantages (other than to my pocketbook) to going for a SCSI optical.

As far as I know, the last Pioneer SCSI DVD is the 305s which is 10x40. The IDE drives are mostly 16x48.
. If you're down with that, and up for about 3-4x the cost over IDE, you're good to go. I had the older Pioneer SCSI slot-load and liked it a lot. It brought good money when I sold it...

I basically use the drive to watch DVDs and as a second CD-ROM, so it doesn't do heavy duty in the first place. And even with the cable I have to buy, the total for the drive that I'm looking at is less than three times the cost of a comparable IDE drive.

I've been watching people say good things about Pioneer drives and SCSI opticals for a while. Figured that this was a good excuse to get my feet wet.
