This is my hardware:

Abit VP6
2 Intel 733's
2 sticks of 128MB Muskin Rev 1.5 Memory
IBM Ultrastar 36LZX 9.17 gig SCSI
IBM deskstar 30 gig IDE
Tekram DC-390UW3 (Ultra 160 SCSI Adapter)
Plextor rw 4/12 SCSI

Here is the problem,

I did an fdisk and created a partition on the 9.1 gig drive. I then formatted and started the installation process for Win98. When it came time for Windows to reboot, it rebooted itself. When it came time for Windows load up again,(after memory count up....etc)I got this error:

DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER.

Ive never done SCSI before, but Im sure that I have everything connected properly. If anyone can help me I would greatly appeciate it.

Did you make the partition active? Run fdisk again, if it doesnt have an active partition fdisk will ask you if you want to make it active.

Yes, its already set to active. I still get the same error

Verifying DMI Pool Data.....

(then a long pause)

DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

After you partitioned and formatted, did you set the "boot device" to "SCSI"?

Yes,

the first boot device in the Vp6's bios is the floppy and the second is SCSI.

Thanks

This may seem like a stupid question, but, I know nothing about that scsi card you have, does it have a boot bios?

Yes

it has one, though I cant find anything kind of significant setting in it that would help out my situation. Maybe I should look for soemthing specifically??

Thanks

What is the drive letter of the 1st partition on your IDE drive? If it's C:, then try setting boot sequence to:

floppy/C/SCSI.

If u load OS to SCSI while u have an IDE hard drive installed, Windows may put some boot files on the C drive. The C drive will then tell the system that the OS is on the SCSI, and it will boot from the SCSI.

Have you set the 'Autostart' jumper on the Ultrstar? I don't have a 36LZX, but on both the 9LZX & the 18LZX, I had to set that jumper. I also heard it's a good idea to set the TERM PWR jumper (bigger jumper) on the drive closest to the terminator - but never more than one device other than the card itself (which provides TERM POWER).

Do u have the terminator on the very last position on the cable? That's where it should .. otherwise, u have what's called a 'dangling cable'.

What SCSI id's have you assigned to your SCSI devices? The HD should be 0 and SCSI card should be 7, also make sure each chain is properly terminated at the end of the chain. I assume you see the Tekram bios on bootup, does it recognize all devices correctly? Maybee it would help if you list your SCSI id's for each device and on what connectors you have them connected (I'm assuming your Tekram has 4 connectors, I'm not familiar with it either).

p.s. I forgot to mention, If you have an ATA100/66 controller on the MB, it is also recognized as a SCSI device, so you may have to disable the controller to boot up from your SCSI card. The MB will boot from the first SCSI device, in this case I belive that is the onboard controller. That's how mine worked with a promise add in controller, I hade to have the controller on a lower PCI slot (relative to my SCSI card) for it to boot. If your Tekram bios is recognized before the onboard controller, that may not be the case with your MB (I'm also not familiar with your MB).

Thanks to everyone who helped out, I took the Plextor off the controller card and Windows started up like normal. Gonna have to figure out what caused that now :)
