SCSI Host Adapter Can't Detect HDD

Hi guys,

I have an Adaptec 29160LP in my current system with a Quantam Atlas 10KIII. However, the host adapter does not detect the hdd at all. I know that the controller and hdd are fine because I just took them out of my other system, where they worked fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

How's your cable/terminator looking? Any damaged areas? Is the drive on the plug that's an inch from the terminator and the card at the opposite end? Any chance the drive lost one of its weentsy micro-jumpers off its underside during the move?

I don't know if the 29160 has more than one internal HD connector but usually if there are two connectors, one is for LVD and the other is for SE devices. Make sure the cable is connected to the correct one and that the terminator is seated tightly in the end connector. And as MB said, check the cable over closely - SCSI very fussy about cables. If you have any qualms at all about your cable, one of these guys (scsi4me) has a very nice teflon cable w/ terminator for cheap:

Some good SCSI vendors:
hypermicro.com (may offer free ground shipping if you mention www.storagereview.com - check the SR site for the latest offer)
centrix-intl.com
pc-pitstop.com (offers PayPal as a payment option)
scsi4me.com (offers PayPal " )
and I can usually find SCSI stuff for low bucks on eBay.

Sometimes controllers are fussy and need to be in a different PCI slot, or it may not be seated correctly. Make sure the power cable to the drive has no loose pins in it too preventing a good full power up.
