Ok I have a 9 gig 10,000 rpm cheetah in my case goin to waste

here is my problem

I have a Adaptec AHA-2940U/UW scsi card Only way I can get the HDD to boot is to have a bootable cd in the cdrom and be running win2k. When I finnaly get windows to boot up my scsi drive the one that I am booting from mind you shows up as E:.

Now I found this odd but it worked but my only problem is that I dont wanna run win2k on my gaming rig. Now I go and try to install win98 on it. Still same delima shows up as E:\ runs through the install fine after it reboots it wont come back up just goes to win98 splash screen and sticks.

So I say fine I just wont boot off of it, Ill just use it for storage and burning from scsi HDD to SCSI CDRW. I [plug in the HDD and windows 98 will not boot at all I unplug it win98 works fine.

I dont know if it is settings but I do have it set to device 0 on the scsi card that that is the id of the HDD. I know the drive works worked on my friends computer just seconds before we pulled it off. The card however has only been used for my cdroms.

I now have a scsi HDD not doin anything but giving me a headache any help would be appriciated. :\

Do you have your CD drives on a different chain than the HD, or on the same one? (I can't remember if that card has two internal ports or not.) If the HD is on a chain by itself, you will need to use some form of external termination, as your LVD HD has none.

Also, did you change the boot order in your BIOS to include SCSI?
Is the BIOS enabled on the SCSI card? (You turn it off w/o a SCSI HD, but need it on to boot to a SCSI HD.)

The SCSI ID of the HD should be fine. Just make sure neither of the CD drives has that ID.

Yes the card has a 68pin and 50 pin internal connectors my Cdroms are on the 50pin and the HDD is on the 68 pin by itself. So the HDD needs a termination even if it on only a dual ended cable. One port into the HDD one into the card. Now would this still need termination.

Oh and yes I do have it booting to scsi first and my bios is on on the card.

Each chain must be terminated at both ends. One end is the SCSI card, and is probably set for auto termination. The last device on the other end of the chain must also be terminated, even if you only have one device.

I initially wasn't sure if you were allowed to use both of the internal ports on that card. Some of the older Adaptec cards had two different internal connectors for convenience only - which means only one internal connector should be used at any given moment in conjunction with the external connector. But according to the manual, it is possible on this card to use both of the internal connectors simultaneously. :)

Don't know if this helps:

This is from your owner's manual:

Computer Will Not Boot from a SCSI Disk Drive

If both SCSI and non-SCSI disk drives are installed,
then the non-SCSI disk drive is always the boot
device. If the system has only SCSI disk drives, do
the following:

1 Make sure the drive type in your computer?s
CMOS setup is set to No Drives Installed.

2 Make sure the boot hard disk SCSI ID corresponds
to the Boot Target ID setting in SCSISelect
(see page 7). The SCSI ID is normally set with
jumpers or switches on the drive.

3 If this does not solve the problem, back up all data
on the SCSI hard disk and perform a low-level
format with the SCSISelect Format Disk option.
See the MS-DOS documentation for instructions
on partitioning the disk after formatting.

I have an Advansys LVD card, two SCSI drives and one Bigfoot 19.2GB. Atlas 10K is boot drive with letter F. WD Advantage is 2nd SCSI drive. Bigfoot is only drive on primary IDE channel.

C: drives? We don' need no stinkin' C: drives!

He doesn't have an Advansys card. He has an Adaptec card.
