i am a newbie to scsi, i have an abit kt7, 900mhz duron, and a 7200rpm ide drive. i want a faster hd and i hear scsi is the way to go. i'd like to get a ultra160 10k rpm drive but the controller card is more expensive than the drive! newegg has drives starting at $120 and controllers at $180.
what is attracting me to scsi is the 4.5-4.9ms access times vs the 8-9ms access times for ide. i really don't know about the details of ultra160 vs the other scsi stuff like ultra2, etc. all i want is the speed. is there a cheap way to get the speed? i heard you could use an ultra2 controller with an ultra160 drive. would that make sense? i also see pricewatch has many cheap 10k rpm drives. are these worth considering? what would be a good controller card for the abit kt7?
