SCSI HD and whining and scuzzing--normal?

My IBM 10K scsi 6LZX 18.2 gig hd whines and "scuzzes" every few moments and seem to be on constantly, even when desktop is still with a fresh install of XP and nothing running. Is there a mode of operation that causes this? I mean, I don't mind the noise when it's seeking but it nearly chirps all the time and wonder if it's normal. The sounds are very unusual and very audible. I tried switching the write cache in the drive properties and didn't notice a change. I have a TEKRAM U160 390UW controller if it helps.

Thanks in advance.

I think it just depends on the model. I have had some drives that made you want to toss them out the window after a few days, and some that are very pleasant. Of course with all the darned fan noise in my boxes the noise isnt near as noticeable, but believe me there are drives out that will kill your nerves. You may have a drive with a bad bearing in it. Best thing to do is contact the IBM people and ask them. They may want to RMA the drive if it is excessive.
