I got a Compaq 64bit PCI dual channel Wide Ultra2 SCSI card currently using in 32bit since my motherboard sucks but compaq says I can so no problem there.

I turn on comp and it detects 2 of the controllers (i'm thinking since it has 2 channels?) ... but both of the drives i put on there are not detected..

the 2 drives on there are both Compaq Ultra Wide SCSI 3 that uses a 80pin to 68pin converter.

Have a few questions maybe someone can help answer or solutions to this problem...

1. Does the way I plug in the drives on the cable matter? (order) (I plan to raid these after getting them to detect)
2. Is this a problem with the adaptor maybe? the adaptors are CSC Rev B with lots of jumpers. The person who sold it to me said it was only for ID of the drives and I should be fine if there are set different. Is this correct?
3. My friend said I can't use both IDE and SCSI... he is wrong right?

4. Any suggestions how to get them to detect?

Thanks for all your help my fellow AnAndTechers
:)

Found Solution....

I plug it into the 2nd channel and it worked... must be something wrong with the 1st channel....

Thanks, for the help and info guys. I really appreciate it

1) shouldn't matter...i haven't had any problems regarding drive placement on cable.
2) as long as the adapter is LVD compatable
3)wrong
4)make sure your using a 68pin LVD Ultra2/160/320 cable that has built-in termination...also check scsi ID's each drive should have its own....scsi card should be default ID of 7.

I don't think those are LVD drives.

1. Anywhere on the cable.
2. You need to figure out what the proper jumper settings are. No guessing. One drive should be set to SCSI ID 0, the other to SCSI ID 1. The LAST drive on the cable needs to be terminated which will be via a jumper on the adapter.
3. He's wrong.
4. Your answer lies in #2 above.

1. Position on the chain doesn't matter, unless you have one of them on the end connector. Then that drive would have to be terminated, as the last position on the cable needs to be terminated.

In most cases sca drives can't terminate themselves. Though they may show that the jumpers to do it are there, but it is disabled.

2. It may be that your version of that adapter is not LVD rated. I have a rev D, and it was rated for 160 LVD.

There are other options on that adapter besides the ID. You can set remote start, start delay and synchronous. It also may have a jumper to hook up for an LED. You shouldn't need any of those other settings. Make sure of the scsi ID setting of each drive. No jumpers is ID 0. Putting a jumper on the 0 jumper, will be ID 1.

3. He's wrong

4. Make sure you have an active terminator on the end of any cable you use. Triple check the ID settings. Make sure that there isn't some setting on the drives themselves that is causing you trouble. Compaq doesn't make their own drives, so whoever made it should have documentation you could check.

You may be running into a sca adapter issue. CSC is a good adapter, there just may be differences with the drive, cable or card. Though I use sca adapters I've run into some pretty strange troubles using them. If after checking all the stuff previously mentioned doesn't do anything, you might try setting the drive to use single ended mode. It should be a jumper setting on the drive. The card would adjust to the new mode.
