Hi all, i'mcurrently looking into setting up a Seagate Cheetah X15 - Hard drive for my new comp, but I've heard that they are quite noisy. Anyone who has one of these sorts of scsi drives and an ide could maybe comment on how loud it is?

Ive heard people complain about them, but I dont really notice it with all my cooling fans running. I have 6 of them all together with 4 in one raid array and 2 in another. I can hardly hear them with the full system running and the hotswap PSUs running.

I've got a Maxtor (Quantum) Atlas 10k III and it is as quite as an IDE drive at idle. It's a little bit louder when it's accessing though.

I just got a scsi 10k rpm and am impressed at how quiet it is, my fans are louder!
I too was afraid of the noise, but it's highly overrated

The only time I typically notice the X15 is when it does it's idle seeks to keep the heads cool. The repeated "ticks" used to bother me, but you get used to it. It's a small price to pay for performance. It does have a gravelly noise to it during heavy access, but the system fans tend to drown it out a bit.

Get the Atlas 10KIII if you want a less noisy drive with great performance.

I have the drive your asking about and it's not that loud. I like it much better than most IDE drives in terms of noise. They don't whine either like older SCSI models.

I have IBM 36LZX 10,000 Ultra160 SCSI hard drive and it's not really loud. The noise it makes is no louder than an average IDE hard drive.
