Hey everyone got a little bit of a problem... in win2k, whenever i boot up, my CDR is non existant... sometimes i get a message saying that it has been disconnected improperly even if it hasnt. I do a quick scan to check for new hardware, and it finds it... saying its working properly. is there any way that i can get this working so i dont have to scan hardware whenever i want to use my burner?

its a yamaha 8x4x24 scsi burner
and the device manager shows the card as a Adaptec aic-7950 PCI SCSI Controller

What is the exact model of the adaptec card? Seems like windows installed the default drivers which may be causing problems. Go to adaptec's web site and download their drivers for your scsi card. That should help.

At boot, does the SCSI card's scan for connected devices list it? Also, go into SCSI configuration, during boot, and make sure there's not an improper setting, and make sure SCSI chain is properly terminated.

is there some easy way of telling what card it is? I got it as a bundle quite a while ago... would the model number be on the card itself?

I know someone who had the same problem. Took him 5 weeks to figure out that Windows Media Player 7 had some adaptec plugin that was killing his drive. He reinstalled WMP7 and they must have updated the plugin because it then recognized his drive.

Strafe, so how did your friend figure this out?

I had a Yamaha 4416 that would not show up either under 2k. I normally use a 2910 which does not show the device list at boot up. I tried a 2940 but didn't remember to check if it showed up in the boot list.

One fun note was if I booted cold, and went into ME, the drive would show up. Then, warm started into 2k, it wouldn't show, then warm started into ME again, it wouldn't show up. Something 2k was doing was sending the drive into lala land.

Most adaptec cards are well labelled as far as what they are.

Not sure whether there's a good "software" way to tell what the card is... 29xx always show up as 78xx series on my machines... (I think)....

I'd be interested to know.
