Also look into the Tekram U3W cards. Ive had great luck with their U2W. They are very inexpensive as well,I think they can be had for around $170 for the full retail package. Which includes all cables and terminators. I think the comparable Adaptec 160 cards range from $230-$300.

Would the 39160 be overkill? Would the 29160N work in a server environment?

Any Tekram card. They performa just as well as Adaptec if not slightly better, and cost a decent bit less.

the 29160n would be fine for a server envirment unless you have a server with a 64bit pci slot the you might want to look into an adaptec 29160 or the 39160 and the tekram DC-390U3D or DC-390U3W. (both 64bit pci)

I'd get Tekram DC390-U3W price/performance or Adaptec 29160N, I like the Adaptec cards but you pay for the name to some degree.

The 39160 might not be overkill.
It's 64bit PCI, do you have 64Bit PCI slot?
It's also Dual channel Ultra160, do you have enough fast drives that you'll saturate a single 160MB/s bus?

The 29160 and 29160N are fairly similar with the 29160 being 64bit PCi, the 29160N being only 32bit.

The 19160 is identical to the 29160N except that the 19160 only works in Windows and is a bunch cheaper. If your server will be windows based then this guy is probably the best choice.

I've seen no bad recommendations here. I have this card .. so does Pariah. It's prolly your least expensive route. Comes with all the cabling & terminators you'll need .. which can get expensive if purchased separately. I've used the card with the following OS'es:

* Win2K
* WinME
* W98/SE
* Whistler pro beta1
* Caldera 2.4
* Mandrake 7
* BeOS (Freebe)

Use mine with 5 SCSI devices: 3 LVD drives (IBM Ultrastars), a CDROM & burner (both Plextor). Review here.

RadBoy: that card is a good card, but is not Ultra 160. If you intend to put together a SCSI system today, you'd be much better with a U160 controller.

The 29160N or 29160 are both excellent cards, but in most cases the 29160 is better. It supports 64-bit 66MHz PCI, as well as 32-bit 33MHz PCI, and has an additional internal 68-pin non-LVD connector, so you can use both Ultra wide and Ultra LVD drives without a performance hit. The 19160 is roughly equivelent to the 29160N, I believe the only difference is the drivers available for it. The 39160 would be overkill unless you intend to put enough hard drives in it to outperform the 160 MB/sec SCSI bus. Even then, if you have 15 or less devices, you could get away with a 29160.

Thanks Noriaki & kombatmud, These are the answers I'm looking for. No 64Bit PCI slot here, as very few people do I'm sure. I don't even have a SCSI HD so far so it's unlikely I'd saturate a single 160MB/s bus. Thanks to all who replied, I love this board!

I agree that the U160 is a better card, and I'm not saying it's a bad choice .. but until a hard drive can sustain more than 40MB/s, then U2W is still not a bottleneck. Not sure how long this will last, but we got a ways to go if the X15 can barely scratch 40 (realistic). If he won't notice the diff (yet), why pay for it?

How much are the cards ur pimping? Retail? .. with all the cables & terms goodies? .. for the 1st-time SCSI player.

I recommend Adaptec 29160N for desktop users. 19160 is a good card but only support Win9X and NT workstation.

The majority of the cards people listed are not hardware RAID, are you wanting RAID?

I use a Adaptec 29160 now. On my next system will try a Tekram DC390-U3W after all the good reviews.

Here if you want 160...

Tekram DC-390U3W Ultra160 SCSI Adapter

This is a great shop...

And by the way the shipping is awesome... at least to fl... i have ordered from there before... took them 4 days to ship ground,,,

And the nice thing is that they calculate shipping right away... and just add another 3$ for the next product... depending on the size...

nice store.. sorry but that had to be... since i am getting the same card...

Thanks Radboy... for the great help... and nice site...

He doesn't have a SCSI HDD... so what would you need a raid card for?

I am not knowing that is why I am asking... i thought you would only want one if you had 2 or more hdds to hock up...

???

If i am wrong let me know about SCSI RAID::

Thank you all...

lets talk a little about raid...

I now have a SCSI HD an old 2.1 Seagate with 68 pin. Looking to build a sever and would like something that won't be obselete in a year, (Controller card). Although I'm learning that U160 might be overkill as HD's don't do it that fast.
