SCSI card cache memory questions *FIXED*

PROBLEM FIXED: The stick definitely works. The card only sees 128MB of it, though. I wonder if this will hurt performance? We'll find out soon. Thanks, AT.

Hey there,

I received my LSI Megaraid Elite 1600 today. (Purchased on EBay last week).

The seller shipped it with a 256MB stick of PC100 RAM. According to LSI, this card only supports up to 128MB of ECC RAM.

QUESTIONS:

1. Will the stick work?
2. The card only supports ECC memory; this RAM stick has 9 chips per side...IIRC, 9=ECC, 8=non-ECC, so this is ECC, right?

The ram is labeled :

HP (Hewlett Packard) D7157A 0025
M374S3323BT0-C1LH0
256MBytes-100MHz
1818-7555 (32Mx72)
PC100 Unbuff.sdram

Thanks!!

Stick the RAM in the card, plug the card in the machine, and boot it up. The SCSI card BIOS message should tell you all you need to know.

Ah, the old "If you can't wind'em then grind'em" methodology. Actually, that DID cross my mind, but I'd hate to fry the card or something.

I'm going to HPs site and searching on that part number. I searched Crucial's site and came up empty.

I found it on HPs site. Linkage.

It's definitely ECC and that's good. My main worry is that the card won't recognize the stick b/c it's 256MB. I was planning on updating to the latest bios for the card...if it isn't there already.

That makes no sense why they would do that...

The card will support 128MB DS DIMM. If a 256MB DIMM is inserted it may only read 128 or even 64. I never tried this, however.

These cards work with non ECC memory but I don't recommend it especially if you use write back cache.

Cheers!

Thanks, Shuttleteam.

The memory works fine in the card. The card only sees 128MB of it, though. I wonder if this will hurt performance?

Yes the card ignores the other 128MB. It cannot see it. (Did I tell you SCSI really means System Can't See It? 😛 ) It will perform the same as a 128MB module.

Cheers!
