It seems the poor are being assaulted in the Katrina Ravaged South. I have seen a lot of news and information about how the funding for Katrina Releif is often misdirected to the rich and very little is spent on the poor and the not so well off residents.

I dont really have a solution, but it looks like there is a concerted effort to spend less and less on the poor.

There is no easy solution. The citys tax coffers are empty... with a smaller population there is less tax revenue. What would you do? let the people move back into unsafe apartments so they could sue the city when a wall collapses?

I wonder how many of the protestors actually lived in the housing that is being taken down and how many are just there to protest.

If the city doesn't build more low income housing to replace what they are tearing down then they will be shooting themselves in the foot. That entire state is a terrible place to live anyways.

I have a solution. How much would it cost to buy them all a home? Probably less than what we have spent already.

About time

These poor were serving no one.

They were and are nothing but a drain on working society.

Besides that's what America is all about now.

Tax breaks to the rich and more money for the rich.

When I left New Orleans Donald Trump had amassed 38% of residential property down there, I'm sure it's well over 50% now.

What I am trying to say is that the states of Louisiana and Mississippi were given more than enough funds to build these people a place to stay to call home and it was all wasted by their own corrupt governments. They could have already rebuilt all of these people a place to live by now.

I would be willing to bet that there would be scores of volunteers wanting to volunteer free labor just to help them. They really need some real leadership in Louisiana. I think this is all a concerted effort to steal what land they can from those people who have little or no resources.

What in the hell is wrong with helping out the less fortunate, via protesting alongside them? I don't have enough money to donate to people, so when there is a protest against disgusting practices such as this one, I will attempt to make time for it, and add in my voice to the cause.

Since I'm not living on the street, I am going to try and help out whenever I can, so long as I'm not struggling for rights of my own. It's called community.

Wow, I don't know where to begin with the misinformation being thrown around in this thread. My favorite is Dave thinking Trump owns half of New Orleans' residential property. That's a great one.

Nobody's being thrown out on the street, the big 4 have been unoccupied since Katrina. New, mixed income neighborhoods are planned and will be built in the footprints of the developments. In the meantime, those who need it are offered rental assistance vouchers or hotel vouchers or other public housing. The old developments were a failed system, they kept the poor segregated from the rest of society, never giving them an opportunity to find a way out of a life of government assistance. The new mixed income developments might not be perfect, but they will offer residents a path toward home ownership and financial independence at least. Pre-K these projects were in terrible condition, regardless of crime and drug use. Asbestos, mold, poorly maintained utilities, etc. Really terrible places to live.

I like Jarvis DeBerry's editorial from today's T-P.

Didn't Nagin and everyone else in charge during Klusterfckatrina get reelected?

Yes, he was, as was "Dollar Bill" Jefferson. Other than that, I can't think of anyone else in the national spotlight who was reelected. Blanco did not run for another term; Bobby Jindal won the governers race. The city council has a lot of new blood, and they're the only ones involved in this matter.

So you don't have enough money to donate to people that have had 2 years to get their shit together, but you have the time to protest and FORCE other people to "donate" (through taxes) their money? Why don't you take that time, get a part time job, and donate all of that money to the "less fortunate" that can't seem to find a job in over 2 years? But then that might take a little more effort than railing against "the man" on an internet message board or taking 1 day out of your busy life and "protesting" for them.

For parasites, I doubt most people would object to your view. It's the parasites' children most people with a conscience are worried about. You can say "cut off their funds" all you want, but signing a law that results in starving millions of kids somehow always looks bad when re-election comes up. Helping the kids while kicking their parents in the ass is not a simple problem to solve.

Hey, why don't we take some of that 80billion for Iraq War and help out are own? It's my tax money so if I want to spend it for "HELPING" people instead of "KILLING" them shouldn't I have a right?

Double standards are ok for you tho...

Bush admin had 6 years to get their shit together and where is the progress? Where is the outrage?

If you want to help out then feel free, I'm sure no one down there would turn you away when you show up and volunteer your time or money. The Iraq war and the spending going on there is a completely separate issue. I had no problem with money being spent in NO to help people out after Katrina. I do have a problem with it being 2 years later and these people still not even having a job. This thread is not about Bush or Iraq so take your BDS somewhere else.

Hell, Dave was wiped out in NO, he managed to pick himself up and move on. If Dave can do it anyone can do it.

Edit - Can I assume that you are voting for Ron Paul since he is the only Presidential candidate that will (try at least) immediately withdraw all US forces from Iraq?

I heard a news report today that some (don't recall how many) were out-of-towners hired for the protest and bussed in.

Reminded me of Dave's comment about "follow the money" in yesterday's thread. He was dead on.

Yesterday everbody noted that these protesters were white people, not the expected black residents of such housing. Now we know tha they aren't even residents of N.O.

Are you kidding??

Let me clue you in to some of the facts.

1. See those people in the picture? They are all white. Guess what, white people simply do not live in the New Orleans housing projects. No racist nonsense just a simple fact. The people you see are paid protesters.

2. 90% of the units they are demolishing do not and will not meet even the loosest health codes. The buildings are rat infested, decrepit, asbestos filled, lead paint having buildings that I would not allow my dog to go in much less a human being. The Feds are paying to rebuild nice new mixed income units for the poor folk. You know, get them around more than other poor folk. You may prefer to keep all of the poor people in one little spot but its been proven that they just stay poor folk (for the most part) in that setting.

3. A very large portion of those units have not be gutted or even opened since Katrina. You have any idea the kind of mold growing on the floors and walls? How about the refrigerators turned science experiments? Thats a smell you simply can't get out after that long. Are you advocating spending just as much and taking just as long to rehab extremely shitty old buildings as it would cost/take to build nice new ones?

That was a surprise. Thank you

Yes, if my wife and I didn't go for the American Dream on a business we both wanted but were suckered by a ruthless Deputy Sheriff and his friends we would both be OK now even with me losing my job in October.

I'm picking up and moving on again, this time to New Jersey.

Hopefully I land on both feet and in as soon as possible I can have my wife and family join me in our yet another new adventure.

Since we met she said she always wanted to see New York City so this will be her chance.

I have not been back to New York since left in 1988.

I can't wait for real Pizza and real bagels.

Also to pay homage to fellow Firefighters and Police friends I lost at the WTC site.

Will we ever find out who funded the phoney protests?

There should be an FBI investigation.

I want to know because I bet there is taxpayer money being spent by these Corporate whores.
