Screwy WinXP

NutBucket

I finally decided to try out WinXP on my system. Now that I have an extra HD, I had no more excuses not to try it. Anyway, at first it refused to install. So I tried changing my setup some. Then I decided to run my processor at default speed. That solved the problem. Got windows installed and running, so I tried to overclock again. It freezes going into windows. Then I set the speed back to default but leave the voltage boosted. Won't go into windows. I can't figure out why this would affect anything. My system was absolutely rock solid w/ 98SE. I know plenty of ppl run overclocked w/ WinXP and I'm running a "safe" o/c (celly 566-->850). Any ideas would be appreciated.

Well, for one the WinXP system uses checksums on the entire drive contents in order to make it possible for a restore in the event of catastrophic failure. It also uses memory checksums and regular error correction in the programming to prevent corruption of the kernel core and file system. Overclocking may be causing alot of red flags for the system and it tends to make WinXP unhappy.

btw - This is more a hardware than software issue. Perhaps you'd have more response under the software and operating system forums.

We're going to have to get some more information, complete system specs. What does it do when it "freezes", is there a BSOD?

XP (and 2k) are MUCH more sensitive to overclocking than 98. Fact of life - any overclocked system is more unstable than if it wasn't overclocked. Sometimes you can get away with it, sometimes you can't.

I've seen situations where and overclocked system works perfectly except that it can run ONE application while overclocked.

You might just have to back off on the FSB if you want to run XP.

Well, fixed that. I did the hardware voltage mod so that my chip defaults @ 1.65V. Cranked the FSB up to 100 and it boots right into XP @ 850. Wierd.
