Screwed up in Partition Magic 5.0 - desperate for help!

Up until 10 minutes ago, I had my 20gig hard drive split into two partitions. I decided to split the second partition in half again using partition magic 5. So I went through all the procedures, and clicked apply changes. It got about half way through and then gave an error message (I think it was 4400, can?t believe I didn?t write it down). Problem is, I now have D: and E: partitions that are not accessible. Every time I try to explore them, it simply says ?d:\ is not accessible. A device attached to the system is not functioning. I tried merging all the partitions into 1 ?c: but that didn?t seem to work. I?m really not sure what to do now.

Please help someone :( I?ve only got 7.75gigs on my hard-disk now, and I?m starting to panic. Thanks.

edit: when I try to merge the partitions to the original primary partition, the message I'm getting is: error 117 - partition's drive letter could not be identified

You are going to have to call Powerquest. They will be able to help you. In as much as you may not want to, you are going to have to do it. They are one of the most knowledgeable support for their utilities out there. They get right down to the byte. They will e-mail you utilities that are not included with the PartitionMagic software and tell you how to use it for their technical purposes. Good Luck.

You have a private message on the forum. Just mentioning it because I've sometimes overlooked the little flashing icon at the top of the page.

Best regards,

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm still having no luck :(:( I'm just wondering - is there a way to just totally format my hard-disk back to it's original form? I wouldn't particularly mind seeing as I don't have too much data on it at the moment. Is this possible, or are those damn broken partitions firmly locked in place?

Thanks again :(

fdisk in dow. and delete all logical partitions and this will allow you to clean start
there is no such thing as a permanent partition.

what i would do if you are gonna reinstall, do a low level format, im sure the vendor of your hd will have a util for this, if you cant find one, ill send you a generic one that i have, but i would have to find it first.

Thanks, so if I F-DISK in DOS, I'll lose info. on my C drive, but I'll be able to merge all the partitions again? Or would a low level format be a better option?

If you FDisk in dos you can wipe all the partitions from the HD, you will loose all your data, and then create a new primary partition - which you then can format and install windows. I don't think a low level format will do anything extra for you..
