I have an ABIT NV7m n-force mobo. Last night, I went to update the bios (to support a CPU I am planning on getting) and it locked up after erasing the previous bios. I let it sit all night and no go, so I fearfully hit reset and all I got was a long beep (like when someone dies in the hospital) and then the floppy spun for a while.

It just so happens that I have another NV7m mobo, not in use. I am wondering, is it OK to pull the bios chip (it's socketed) off of the unused board and insert it in the new board.

Also, is there any way /anyone that can reprogram the old chip for me? Or, is there anywhere I can get a new one?

Thanks

ps, Abit website says...quote... "!!! WARNING !!!
NV7-133R and NV7m BIOS need special AWDFLASH version 8.14 (35,294 bytes in file size). Updating BIOS via wrongful AWDFLASH version will cause incorrect data and some times fail to boot up. "abit NV7m download page

This is what I used

You should be able to find a shop that can reprogram your BIOS chip for you. Since you have another identical board you could try a hot swap (i.e. use the working chip to boot, then swap to the dead chip after booting in order to flash it). Personally I wouldn't recommend it but I've seen claims that it actually works. Myself, I would pay to get it reprogrammed at a shop.

Hmmm, I've never had any luck getting this type of chip out of a socket without crossing some pins, so I think I'll just take it in
Thanks for the advise

UPDATE:
I got a little brave and tried the "hot swap" method. Worked like a charm!!! Booted up w/ dos disk with known good bios chip in. Used my trusty chip puller to yank out that chip and carefully placed new chip into the socket. Ran the AWDFLASH.exe instead of the .bat file that I ran last night. Wham bam, she works.

Once again, thanks!!
