Damn Cox RoadRunner totally screwed up my winsock in win98 and now I cant load any web pages.

At a command prompt I can ping only numeric i.p. address's , attempting to ping an alpha i.p. address gives the result of "unknown host"

no web pages will load in internet explorer at all, whether I enter an alpha i.p. or numeric

RoadRunner was having problems in my area this weekend, at least thats what I found out today, every time I called tech supt over the weekend they said there were no outages and that I could have a service call in a week :|

One tech went through a few steps with me, one of which was uninstalling all the network stuff and re-installing it, during the install he told me to answer yes if I was asked to overwrite a newer file, this is where they screwed me, the service was actually down and there was nothing wrong with my win98 install until he had me overwrite the files while reinstalling the network protocols, now I am stuck, reinstalling windows didnt fix it (not fresh, over the old) uninstalling D.U.N. didnt fix it, I went through a couple of articles at M.S.'s site and did what was recomended, but still no go.

So, short of deleting the windows directory and doing a fresh install, how can I fix this, I know that the service is working because I am dual booting win2k and win2k is working fine.

Well, if you get desperate enough you could try this:

Winsock 2 update

However, it does say right on the page that it is NOT made for Win98, only Win95.

Good luck,

Remove EVERYTHING from the Network Control Panel, and don't reboot. Uninstall DUN, and don't reboot. Reinstall DUN, and don't reboot. 'Start' -> 'Run', and type in 'sfc'. Choose the second option, and type wsock32.dll in the blank. Click 'start'. In the restore file from box, type the path to the cabinet files. In the save file in box, type c:\windows\system. Reboot when prompted, restore your network settings, reboot again, and your problem should be fixed.

Hey reitz, That looks like what they had me do already, I will try it tonight in those exact steps and see what happens

windogg and NaughtyusMaximus, what's so funny? ;)

ERJ, I tried that already, didnt seem to make things any worse but didnt fix it either, I uninstalled it as per m.s.'s instructions a short time later.

My cox (@home) dns servers were screwed for 3 days in a row. You sure they aren't having problems with them?

yeah I was going to say that if you can ping IP adresses, your internet is fine. Check your DNS settings.

all you had to do was run scanreg /restore and pick a day before the
changes you made.
