XviD is an open source MPEG-4 codec that is fully compliant with MPEG-4 standards. As soon as B-frame support is added to XviD, it shall kick the <> out of DivX. :D It's like LAME for the video scene. ;)

XviD owns you.

The XviD playback filter is totally MPEG-4 compliant. It will play back DivX 4 and 5 movies, but DivX 3 movies wont be played with the XviD playback filter. Just install DivX 3 for DivX 3 content, and XviD for everything else :)

Now why can't they pick a better name for there codec ?

All these cryptic names are annoying...

The only reason you get fast speeds with DivX 5 and duallies is because one proc is decoding the MPEG-2 stream (frameserving), and the other is encoding with DivX
That can be done with XviD. :)

Wow! Such a clever naming convention...

Maybe the new codec for MPEG-5 will be cleverly named DivXviD...

Oh well, I'll probably have to download it to view the newly encoded movies anyway, so I shouldn't complain too much.

And therin lies the problem. 99% of my encoding is animation, for which B frames make a HUGE difference. B-frames in XVid have been just around the corner for 5 months now, when are they finally going in !?

If you are seriously interested in compression, check out the book "An Introduction to Data Compression" by some indian guy whose name starts with K (sorry, too lazy to look it up right now). There are a couple of copies on ILL, one of which will be in my possession in two weeks :) Anyways, to make a long story short, as it stands now, IF there will be a mpeg-5 standard, it will mainly be focusing on the wrapper, not the actuial compression. We are starting to hit some serious walls in advancing lossy video/audio compression, which there is still a ton of work to be done with the wrapper. Ask anyone whose had to produce a DVD or mess around with subtitles and multiple audio tracks in MP4's and you will get quite an earful . . .

Pr0n sure does have a huge effect on technology :)

I read somewhere that that is actually true. PC Magazine or something? The Porn industry was the first on the web with all the transaction stuff right?

>> So Quicktime 6, then?

Sorta funny you mention that. The mpeg4 wrapper essentially is quicktime. Apple's proposal was the one that the standard is based on.

pr0n has been the first (or sometimes second) application of almost every new media ever created.
