Screenshot with hotkey

I am looking for a basic screenshot app for Windows 7 that I can activate using hotkeys, like the one they have in Mac (I think, Alt+Shift+5 or similar)

As I said, basic, be able to select the area and save as png.

Thanks in advance

Can do it with built in functions, there is the print screen key on the keyboard and you can use mspaint to save the image, or can use paint.net as well, that is what i use when needing to take simple screenshots

The 'Snipping Tool' that comes with Win7 does all of that except the hotkey activation bit 🙂

I usually use my old install of Paint Shop Pro 5 which has a 'Capture' menu and feature which can be configured to a hotkey, targeting the active window, etc.

Sorry, I did not mention it in the post but both are 2 steps processes and many a times I do not have that much time to print screen, paste and save or fire up snipping tool and save the image. So I want something that I can fire up quickly, select area and as soon as the area is selected, it saves with the preset and location fixed in the options.

I need this mainly when I am attending a webinar and the slides are changed fast (I can not tell the speaker to hold on because I am listen only mode).

You can't just ask for a copy of the presentation slides? When my wife went to uni, it was fairly standard practice for the presentation to be available online before the lecture, then people could print it out and make notes alongside the slides.

Then you can concentrate on what's being talked about rather than making sure you've grabbed each slide.

No, these are not academic seminars. These are seminars presented for Autism spectrum disorder. So essentially, they are charity (read favor). They do not even respond to your emails because as a parent with child on Autism spectrum, you are on the losing end of the stick. You need them, they don't need you. If not you, there are 79 others lined up to meet them..
I hope you got my frustration.

In ideal situation, I would just record the webinar if I could.

You can create a hotkey (Shortcut Key) that will open the snipping tool. these steps are for Vista, but also apply to 7...

Along the same line, seems you should be able to script prtscrn to grab the whole thing, give it a name, and store it. That would be my preference since it requires less work while the presentation is going. If you're concentrating on manipulating the computer, you aren't giving the presentation your full attention. Maybe something like Fraps could do it also.

You are SPOT ON.
Since I have no clue of scripting, I was looking into some utility that would do the job for me.

Still I have to save the image, right?

Yes, you would.

You could try installing Jing (free utility from TechSmith) and using it to record your screen to a video.

edit: looks like Jing's videos are limited to 5 minutes. Maybe look into SnagIt (also from techsmith)...it's $50 but may be worth it. I've used it to capture screen videos before.

Do you have ms onenote? It can use win+s for screen cap and can automatically save to a new note within the program

I'm using screenhunter. It is very easy to configure and you need to do that only once. You can assign a key or a combination and each time you hit that it creates an image in a user specified directory. You can set it to save the complete screen or the active window, assign filenames automatically and skip dialog boxes. So basically you will hit the key, save the screenshot and won't even notice it.

All also true of GreenShot. I don't know anything about screenhunter, but I (as well as coworkers) use GreenShot extensively, both at work and at home.

I'm not familiar with GreenShot, is it free software ?

Screen Hunter is free only for personal use.

Nevermind it's free. I'll give it a shot and if it's any good I'll consider installing it at some terminals at work.

Thanks Joe
