Screenshot on Mac

Command-Shift-3.

Command-Shift-4 to capture part of the screen. Enable caps lock to take a screenshot of a window. Or hold the Control key to copy the screenshot to the clipboard.

After all these years, I'm learning this for the first time. I've been using CMD-SHIFT-4 all this time for that.

Thanks man.

I didn't know this either.

Now I feel like an idiot.

Eh, I've been doing IT professionally for 10 years & I still learn new stuff on at least a weekly basis. It's endless

All this is correct. Just wanted to point out that you can do screencasts (record video and sound) using Quicktime Player as well.

Yosemite. CMD-SHIFT-4 spacebar has done window capture for as long as I can remember in OSX.

Oh I see. That works. You have to press the spacebar afterwards. I was pressing it at the same time.

Works in Lion.

"Control key to copy the screenshot to clipboard" is the one I never knew. I can now think back on dozens of instances I could have used that to save a lot of time!

Preview also has options to take screen shots under the "File" menu. If you do it this way, the shot immediately opens in Preview to do whatever you want with it.

The default format of a screen shot is PNG but it can be changed to JPEG, PDF, GIF, etc. You can use a terminal command to change the format but Tinker Tool will do it as well.
