Hey peoples,

I am stuck here with Dial-Up for the summer and my *cheap* parents don't have 2 lines. I know the software is out there for you to be able to screen calls or get a message or know who is calling or something along those lines but I really don't know what everyone out there is using. Obviously "free is good" here so let me know what you have.

Thanks in advance!

What's this, I saw it on the www.callwave.com site:

The Internet Answering Machine works with the "Call Forward On Busy" feature of your phone line to answer calls while you are online.

Is this feature built into everyone's phone line regardless of who is your phone carrier?

I know the V.92 standard incorporates the ability to display caller ID info on the pc when you get an incoming call and place your internet connection on hold (not actually disconnecting) while you chat for a few minutes. Might just wanna look for an isp that supports v.92

even though callwave doesn't charge, doesn't the ph company charge a monthly fee for callfwd or whatever service they utilize?

things don't come that easily for free... maybe you should try getting a job and pay for the extra line? if you are not of age to work, try washing cars for neighbors, lawn mowing... something to make 30 dollars for the internet connection you want :)

-or-

try signing up for 1 month cable modem with free installation and then cancel it.

i just have to crap on your thread because of your comment about your parents being cheap... why can't you pay for something for a change?

the callwave thing you need a forward if busy feature which will cost you extra on the phone service itself.

so either get a new line, leave the call waiting on so you get cut off everytime someone calls... or try to get a "trial" month of cable modem... or DSL... they usually offer 1 month trial with no installation fee... (well u need to spend 10 dollar for a nic card.)

good luck

I had call forwarding from Quest for awhile. It was like $4-6 per month. I would forward all calls on my home line to my cell phone. The caller ID on the cell phone would display who was calling my home phone, even though I didn?t have caller ID on my home phone, only my cell. This works great if you have a cell phone (and don?t mind letting other family members use it while you?re online).

Otherwise, just get a job and a cable modem for around $50/mo.
