i just put this sytem together today. i am using an Asus A7V8X-X motherboard, one stick of 512mb PC3200 ram, and an athlon xp 1600+ cpu (the older ones with the palmono core) when i go and turn on the system, the monitor will not switch on. i have tried switching the memory to different slots. i have used three different video cards; GF2 Ultra (AGP), TNT2 (AGP) and a GF 2 MX 200 (PCI). i also do not get any beep codes. i have no idea why it is not working. everything is connected properly. any help is greatly appretiated, thanks.

Welcome to the Forums dauthi88 😀

  • What brand & model is your power supply, and your memory module?
  • Do the fans start and stay running when you power it up, or does the system turn itself off again?
  • Is the keyboard plugged into the keyboard port for sure, and not the mouse port? Keyboard port is the one closer to the surface of the circuit board, color-coded purple.
  • Have you tried unplugging the system and resetting the CMOS yet?
  • Have you tried it with no drives plugged into the motherboard?
  • Look to make sure the springy finger things on the I/O panel aren't getting into the network jack or the USB ports.
  • If you have a case with front USB wiring, and it's plugged into the motherboard, unplug it for now.
If it's stubborn, then the next thing I'd do is to take it out of the case, lay it on cardboard, and try it with just the keyboard, video card, memory and CPU. To power it up, use a metal object like a screwdriver tip to make momentary electrical contact between the motherboard's Power Button pins.

Good luck! 🙂

PWS is an Antec true power 550W
memory is crucial PC3200 512mb, unbuffered, non ecc
fans keep going. the system stays on. its as if the system is running and the monitor is just not pluged in
everything is plugged into the right port and nothing is getting into the LAN or USB ports.
i have tried it with all the drives unplugged
i have not reset the CMOS yet, i will do that now.

i just reset the CMOS, and it did not help. i will try taking it out and starting it up on card board later tonight. in the mean time, any other ideas? thanks.

Just to eliminate one possibility... is the monitor still working on other systems? It doesn't have a bent pin on the plug or anything, does it? You might also try turning the monitor fully OFF (rocker switch or unplugging it) and then switching it ON just as you start your computer up.

Also, there are some boards that won't POST if they don't see an RPM signal coming in on the CPUFAN header, so if you don't have a 2000RPM+ fan plugged into it, you might try that really quick. I'm not sure if your board is one of these types or not but I'll look into that.

Try reseating CPU/heatsink. Is there a speaker hooked up to the mobo headers? If not, use one from another PC to see if you can get a post beep. Refer to the documentation and recheck all jumpers.

Those are good suggestions, and make sure the heatsink's stepped end is oriented to match the raised, solid-plastic end of the CPU socket too. Usually, orienting it the other way would result in the board doing an emergency power-off, but you never know.

By the way, as a result of reading the manual, I ended up posting this thread 😛 Amusing! 😀

i have already tried reseating the cpu and heatink, but it did not help. and it is on there properly. the speaker is hooked up correctly, but im not getting any beep codes.

I'm going to suggest this: try taking the board out of the case and laying it on cardboard. Now remove the memory and the video card, and then power up the system by making momentary contact between the motherboard's Power Button pins with a screwdriver tip or other metal object.

If that doesn't provoke some beep codes, then it seems logical that either the board is bad, the CPU is bad, or the power supply is bad, because that's all you've got besides the keyboard, and it's out of the case so that eliminates ground-out as a possibility.

The PSU is very unlikely to be bad, but you could try it in another system to confirm it does work. I don't know if you have another CPU (or another SocketA board to test this CPU with), so then it would come down to guessing whether it's the CPU or the board.

If the system does give beep codes, however, then I would leave the board out of the case, add the RAM and a video card, and see what happens. If it won't fly, try just the RAM, and just the video cards. Good luck! 🙂
