I've had a small problem with my monitor for a long time, but its getting worse. The screen will turn yellow (more like a yellow tint) when its moved. Wiggling the VGA cable at the back of the monitor will fix it, but it is VERY sensitive to movement now. It has happened on different video cards. Has anyone seen a problem like this? Is it the monitor or the cable? Can I replace the cable? The monitor is a Gateway EV700.

Thanks for any suggestions

It is more than likley that it is a bad solder joint at the cable end and can be fixed easly by opening the case and resoldering the cable ends. Dont worry about getting zapped just unplug the monitor and let it sit for a while letting all the caps discharge, despite all the talk about the danger if allowed to discharge it is no problem.

Doubtful that it is inside the monitor.

More than likely a problem in the VGA connector.
Are there any bent or broken pins?
Are the pins tight in the connector?

It could be a damaged wire within the cable itself, making a poor contact.

If you need a replacement cable, you have a good chance of finding one here:

I have been told that as long as you don't remove the EM shield you are safe.

one way or another one of the clolr signals is not getting through.

replacing the cable is good, as long as it is not permanantly attached. I think I have only really old monitors, and the newer ones with multiple inputs have user replacable cables

I've had this problem afflict my old setup twice. The first time, it was the VGA cable that needed replacement. The problem manifested itself once again and this time, the technician soldered some connections internally and thing were back to normal again.

If you havent done any soldering work before or are uncomfortable about messing with the insides of the monitor, don't! I dont think a monitor is a good place to start experimenting.

Either the cable pin or an internal trace carrying the blue signal is being flaky. When you lose the blue signal, you're left with red and green only, and red + green = yellow (when working with light).

I assume the monitor isn't under warranty, or you would have taken that route already. Try a local electronics repair place; they should be able to replace the cable and/or do the necessary internal repairs.

Thanks for the replies. In trying to fix it I determined that the problem was in the cable in the few inches before it connects to the monitor. A new cable willl be needed because trying to fix it made it worse.
