Screen tearing on DVDs while using VLC

I've been watching a few episodes of grey's anatomy on my computer and have noticed what looks a bit like tearing in some scenes. It doesn't happen consistently through an episode, just maybe twice for 3 or 4 seconds each time. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

I've got an e6600 and an x1950pro with drivers a few months old. Come to think of it, I should go update those right now.

Lately it seems to be more frequent. I think a better description of the efect would be localized tearing on a single part of the screen as opposed to all the way across.
